From the Organizer:
A local comedy club is putting on a stigmatizing murder mystery called Psych Ward Wacker. The stigma around mental hospitals keeps many in need from admitting themselves to psych units and this can and does lead to dire circumstances.
Comedian Deena Nyer Mendlowitz, along with fellow comedian Mark Colella, tried to get the club to change the show but they refused, so they're putting on their own show instead.
Deena Nyer Mendlowitz, who has hosted her own live mental health comedy show Mental Illness and Friends for the past 8 years, is putting on a very special episode call Psych Hospital Hope.
It will be an hour or so of stand-up comedy, true stories, and music from people who have been patients and staff in psych hospitals, showcasing the humanity, intelligence, and humor that exists in these spaces.
Deena, who hosts the show, will have guests including Mark who is a comedian, Dionne Atchison, who is also a comedian, will be perform, along with Kate Auger, who is a suicide loss survivor. The Musical guest will be Marionna McMillon-Corey who has been a music therapist on an in-patient psych unit.
There will be a resource table staffed by NAMI and the theater will also be collecting DVDs, books, and games for the different Psych units at Lutheran Hospital.
